Why Investors Are Betting on New Materials

A company developing new materials has just attracted $450 million in investment, giving it a valuation of around $2.6 billion. Among its backers is Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, alongside major venture capital firms, AMD Ventures and the UK government.

The company is CuspAI, a UK-based technology business using artificial intelligence to discover materials that could be used in semiconductors, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing. Its investors are effectively betting that finding improved raw materials can become a major technology business in its own right.

That is unusual because materials are rarely the most visible part of a technology story. When consumers see new products such as the electric car or the smartphone, investors often focus on the electronics or machinery inside them.

But none of these technologies can advance very far without the right materials. There is no electric car or smartphone without modern battery materials, toughened glass, and the latest polymers.

As the company’s founders Chad Edwards ​and Max Welling explain, “If we don’t make progress fast, the next 50 years of industrial progress will be constrained by a single challenge: the world needs ​materials that don’t yet exist.”

Materials Are Becoming Technology

For much of the industrial era, engineers have been forced to select from an established range of metals, plastics, ceramics, and composites and then designed products around their properties.

But that is changing as consumer demands on modern products are becoming increasingly difficult to meet with conventional materials. People want longer-lasting batteries which charge faster, more effective medicines with fewer side effects, or safer cars that use less fuel.

This is creating new markets for materials that are not simply cheaper or easier to process but are engineered to perform a specific function.

The CuspAI investment is a striking example of investors recognising this opportunity, and using its artificial intelligence platform can take materials through a discovery cycle involving design, simulation, synthesis planning, and experimental validation. The project is centred on its newly launched AI Materials Foundry which brings together more than 45 companies, including Nvidia and Meta, to develop materials-discovery technology.

The Nanotechnology Opportunity

Nanotechnology is adding another dimension to this development.

At the nanoscale, materials can behave differently from the same substances at larger dimensions. Nanomaterials can therefore be used to introduce properties into an existing material that would otherwise be difficult to achieve.

For polymers, this can mean changing the way a material conducts electricity, responds to heat, resists wear, conducts electricity, interacts with its surroundings, or behaves mechanically.

But that does still not add value or make for a decent investment. A manufacturer is unlikely to spend money simply because a particular nanoparticle is interesting. They want a material that solves a problem.

The value of nanotechnology therefore comes from bridging the space between scientific nanoscale effects and creating a measurable improvement in a finished product.

Where Czechia Can Compete

This gap is particularly relevant to the Czech Republic, as the country already has the combination of a strong industrial base in engineering, automotive manufacturing, and polymer processing, as well as established research capabilities in nanotechnology. For decades, the Czech government has been actively supporting the development of high-value technology businesses (via CzechInvest and EU support grants) and describes nanotechnology as an area with significant potential.

The company’s work is focused on the practical side of nanomodification: determining how nanomaterials can be incorporated into polymers and how the resulting materials can be designed for specific applications.

This could be a chemically resistant paint for toxic mining environments, an electrically conductive flooring for storage spaces holding electronics or data centres, or a scratch-resistant polycarbonate for everyday consumer items.

Why Investors Are Paying Attention to Nanotechnology

The $450 million invested in CuspAI does not mean that every nanotechnology business will become a multibillion-dollar company. But it does provide a useful indication of where sophisticated investors believe future industrial value could emerge.

Software can be updated and machines can be redesigned, but once a better material has been developed and incorporated into an industrial product, it can become part of the physical infrastructure of an entire industry.
